Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has announced a final investment decision to develop one of the largest carbon capture projects in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Habshan Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) project is able to capture and store 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year in underground geological aquifers, which is part of the broader carbon management strategy of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

According to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, it aims to create a platform that connects all emission sources and storage points to accelerate the achievement of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and the United Arab Emirates' decarbonization goals. This not only includes the Habsha project, but also several other technology driven pilot projects, including carbon dioxide mineralization and complete carbon sequestration in the saline water layer. The project will be constructed, operated, and maintained by the Abu Dhabi National Oil and Gas Company on behalf of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. It will include carbon capture devices, pipeline infrastructure, and a network of carbon dioxide injection wells for the Habsha natural gas processing plant - a measure that will double the organization's carbon capture capacity to 2.3 million tons per year.

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director of Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, cited the call of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to use carbon capture and storage to achieve net zero emissions by the middle of this century, He said, "This milestone project is one of the many practical measures being implemented by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company as we accelerate our decarbonization plan to achieve the net zero emissions target by 2045. In addition to developing a net zero emissions plan, the company also plans to invest $15 billion in developing low-carbon solutions. As Abu Dhabi National Oil Company continues to transition towards a low-carbon future, we plan to further invest to significantly reduce our emissions, including carbon capture and storage, and work with our partners to promote innovation and technological boundaries to consolidate our world leading tradition and industry leadership in carbon management

The company has established its first carbon capture, transportation, and storage facility in Al Reyadah, Abu Dhabi. This project has the ability to process 800000 tons of carbon dioxide annually and is reducing emissions from the steel industry of the United Arab Emirates Steel Company Akon Steel. Abu Dhabi National Petroleum Company has revealed that in addition to producing low-carbon raw materials such as hydrogen, the new Habsha project can also increase the oil recovery rate (EOR) of low-carbon strength barrels.
