Although water is one of the most common fire extinguishing agents, it cannot be used for extinguishing fires in acetylene cylinder depots. The reasons are as follows:
- After contact with acetylene gas, water will undergo a violent chemical reaction, generating a large amount of heat and causing a fire to worsen.
- Acetylene gas can cause serious combustion and explosion when in contact with oxygen. Using water to extinguish the fire can lead to the spread of the fire, endangering the safety of personnel and property.
The conductivity of water can also pose a danger to personnel safety, as acetylene gas can come into contact with water and produce substances such as acetylene gas liquid and acetic acid, which have conductivity. If personnel come into contact with these substances, it can cause electric shock or fire, endangering personal safety.
The fire extinguishing methods for acetylene cylinder depot can be divided into the following types:
- Dry powder fire extinguisher: Using a dry powder fire extinguisher is the most common method of extinguishing fires. When a fire occurs, it is important to use a dry powder fire extinguisher as soon as possible to extinguish the fire and minimize its spread.
- Inert gas extinguishing: Inert gas extinguishing can cause the fire source to lose the oxygen required for combustion, thereby achieving the purpose of extinguishing the fire. This method is suitable for extinguishing fires in small bottle areas.
- Sand covered fire extinguishing: In case of gas cylinder leakage or fire, sand covered gas cylinder can be used to prevent gas leakage and also have a certain fire extinguishing effect.
