At the project site, the staff of Huabei Oilfield Oil Production Plant 3 are busy shuttling around, carefully inspecting and maintaining key areas and equipment, making every effort and actively preparing to ensure the smooth operation of the upcoming 2024 gas injection work, and fully accelerating the pilot test pace of the Balixi Qianshan carbon dioxide underground storage and oil displacement project.

The carbon dioxide storage and oil recovery project (CCUS) is currently the only technological choice to achieve low-carbon utilization of fossil energy, and it is also a key technology that China must adopt to achieve the "dual carbon" goal. According to the International Energy Agency's forecast, the global demand for carbon dioxide storage and oil recovery projects (CCUS) will reach 5.64 billion tons by 2030, and 10.4 billion tons by 2070.

"Our project, in layman's terms, is to collect carbon dioxide from industrial production and inject it into underground oil fields. Firstly, it helps to increase oil production, and secondly, it can allow carbon dioxide to be stored underground in a relatively stable form for a long time, reducing emissions to the air, achieving a win-win situation of oil field production increase and emission reduction and carbon reduction." Hou Dongxing, a technician of the CCUS project at the Engineering Technology Research Institute of North China Oilfield Oil Production Plant 3, introduced that carbon dioxide is an excellent oil displacement medium. Compared with traditional water displacement technology, liquid carbon dioxide has stronger diffusion and the function of dissolving and expanding oil, making it easier to enter the pores of low-permeability rock cores, increasing the fluidity of crude oil, and making the previously difficult to extract rock oil crevice oil "appear.

It is reported that the feasibility study of the project was launched in 2021; In July 2022, it was registered with the National Energy Administration and officially injected with gas in November of the same year. It is the largest carbon dioxide underground storage and oil recovery project in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region. The project design cycle is 40 years, and it is expected to increase oil production by over 3 million tons cumulatively, with a 27% increase in reservoir recovery rate; It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of carbon dioxide will be buried, and the emission reduction effect is equivalent to planting 70 million trees or stopping the operation of 5 million economy cars for one year.

Over the past year of operation, the project has accumulated a wealth of experience. In the next step, North China Oilfield will promote the project in small and medium-sized buried hill groups and low-permeability sandstone reservoirs in the central Hebei region, playing a demonstration role in increasing oil production, efficiency, carbon reduction, and green transformation for petroleum and petrochemical enterprises.
