On May 16th, the first domestic set of "10 million cubic meters/day grade natural gas turbine expander" jointly developed by Southwest Branch of China Petroleum Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Air Separation Group passed the product appraisal of China General Machinery Industry Association.
Sui Yongbin, former chief engineer of the China Machinery Industry Federation, served as the leader of the expert group of the appraisal committee. The members were composed of experts from Xi'an Jiaotong University, CNOOC Research Institute Co., Ltd., Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Co., Ltd., Southwest Petroleum University, Saiding Engineering Co., Ltd., China National Fifth Ring Engineering Company, Sinopec Northwest Oilfield Shunbei Natural Gas Treatment Plant, Southwest Oil and Gas Field Chengdu Natural Gas Chemical Plant, and other units.
The experts of the appraisal committee listened to the technical report of the research and development unit and reviewed relevant documents and materials. Prior to the meeting, some experts conducted on-site inspections and witnessed the operation of the expansion machine in industrial facilities. The innovation points of this product include:
Developed high-power and efficient centrifugal turbine expansion model stages with liquid and high flow rate low-pressure compression model stages, improving the efficiency of large-scale natural gas expansion units;
Numerical simulation and testing were conducted on the strength and vibration mode localization of the impeller, eliminating fatigue damage caused by high-power impeller vibration localization and improving the safety of the unit;
Developed stable control technologies for multiple variable operating conditions, such as axial thrust balance and large torque transmission, suitable for large natural gas expanders to ensure stable operation of the unit;
We have developed an integrated technology for oil and gas separation and recovery in natural gas expansion units, which has improved the operational economy of the equipment.
The expert group believes that the first domestic 10 million cubic meters/day natural gas turbine expander developed has independent intellectual property rights, filling the domestic gap, achieving international advanced performance indicators, significant economic and social benefits, and broad prospects for promotion and application.

In May 2023, a 10 million cubic meters/day grade natural gas turbine expander was applied to the ground engineering application site of production capacity construction in the southern area of Jiaxian Block, Shenmu Gas Field, Jidong Oilfield, and the equipment was successfully debugged in one go. As of now, domestic natural gas turbine expanders with a capacity of 10 million cubic meters per day have been operating safely and steadily for nearly 12 months.
